Leibniz’ Cosmological Argument (in 5 minutes)

In my experience the kalam cosmological argument is more often referred to in apologetics (thanks to William Lane Craig) than Leibniz’ cosmological argument. Nevertheless, Leibniz’ argument, in its own way, offers us a different perspective on the existence of the universe and how it is evidence for a Creator. This video is helpful in unpacking Leibniz’ argument, particularly as it explains the notions of necessity and contingency.

  1. Necessity: Necessary beings exist of their own nature and therefore have no external cause of their existence.
  2. Contingency: The existence of contingent beings can only be accounted for by causal factors outside of themselves.

Both concepts are crucial in understanding why the universe is evidence for God. This video is approximately 5 min. Enjoy!
