The Power of Sport to Promote Peace
In a time where global conflict seems to be everywhere, sports can help foster peace at an international scale. At the same time, sport can also have a huge impact on building peace in our local communities.
The unifying nature of sport transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, encouraging tolerance and understanding. Its principles of fair play, teamwork and respect for the opponent are universally understood.
As a result, sport can empower the most vulnerable groups in society and promote values such as gender equality, healthy living and active lifestyles, community development and the fight against climate change. CISM’s research, such as the Positive Peace Index (PPI), has highlighted the powerful role that sport can have in contributing to peaceful societies and inclusive development.
The Power of Sport to Promote Health
Regular physical activity improves health, reduces risks of chronic diseases and conditions, and increases overall wellbeing. It also contributes to tackling global challenges such as weight problems, poor nutrition and obesity.
It is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) that both children and adolescents should be physically active for at least 60 minutes per day and adults for 150 minutes every week. However, many people do not meet these recommendations.
Sport and physical activity can help tackle this issue, as it has the power to transcend borders and unite communities worldwide while promoting positive values. As such, it is an ideal tool for contributing to the UN’s objectives of sustainable development and peace. This is a key aspect of the IOC’s Olympism365 strategy.
The Power of Sport to Promote Education
While many believe that sports distract from academics, studies show that incorporating sport into education helps students learn better. Incorporating a mix of organized and unorganized sports activities promotes physical and mental health, increases student’s efficiency in learning, and teaches them to balance their commitments – skills that will help them throughout their educational journey and as they prepare for their future responsibilities.
Team sports, in particular, encourage children to work together towards a shared goal and build relationships with their peers. These skills will be valuable in their life after school and beyond, helping them to cope with conflict in the workplace and other social situations. Moreover, achieving success in sports bolsters self-confidence and self-esteem, motivating students to continue to pursue their goals and develop into well-rounded individuals.

The Power of Sport to Promote Gender Equality
Sport teaches women and girls teamwork, self-reliance and resilience. It builds leadership, and challenges harmful gender norms and stereotypes. It makes inspiring role models and shows women as equals. But gender equality in sport is far from a reality.
Women and girls are often disproportionately affected by inequalities resulting from limited access to physical activity, educational opportunities and economic advancement, and a lack of safety from discrimination and violence. UNESCO aims to contribute to a more equitable world of sports, through advocacy, partnerships and research. Learn more about the power of sport from 해외스포츠중계.
We encourage all actors in the sporting ecosystem to implement and reinforce their commitment to the UNESCO Gender Equality Strategy. This includes implementing gender equality strategies; creating safeguarding policies; increasing resource allocation for women’s sport; doing better and more marketing free from gender bias; and promoting women’s achievements. UNESCO also calls for more female role models and leaders in the sports field, including coaching and sport administration roles.
